White Paper: Applying FPA to Data Warehouse Analytics Systems

The white paper from IFPUG New Environments Committee in 2007 – “Function Points and Counting Enterprise Data Warehouses” provided guidance to the users on how to apply the Function Point rules in Data Warehouse environments. Since then, the rising popularity of data analytics and Big Data has driven an evolution in Data Warehouse technology. Users request more complex business analytics and reporting requirements, along with a growing need to simplify the information access within the Data Warehouses.

As a result, new “user friendly” components have evolved for pulling data from Data Warehouses, irrespective of underlying data structures. One such component is the Universe (also known as the Semantic Layer). The Universe is an abstraction created for the user to simplify access to the information required or for downstream consumption, without needing to know the details of the database implementations. Thus, the Universe facilitates an integrated query, reporting and analysis solution for business users via the abstraction layer for the application data that represents business functions.

From the application maintenance and development perspective, there is also a need to quantify the effort spent by the teams to plan, maintain, test, and publish these components to the user.

As highlighted in the diagram below (Figure 1), this paper focuses on sizing the Universe creation and its maintenance in this environment. The paper also helps to understand the impacts on the sizing of reporting requirements where Universe is present in the Data Warehouse environment.
