Metrics that Mean Something
Presented by Tom Cagley
Session Description: Explicit transparency is a hallmark of all agile approaches. Measurement is one form of making the impact of development and work entry explicit and visible. The goal of controlling work entry is simple, to ensure the organization gets the right value when it's needed. Most of the measures and metrics commonly in use are context-driven and will not matter in every environment. So rather than inventory all possible metrics we suggest focusing on the one core area that matters across the board, Flow.
Speaker Bio: Tom is a consultant, speaker, author, coach, and agile guide who leads organizations and teams to unlock their inherent greatness. He has developed estimation models and has supported organizations developing classic and agile estimates. Tom helps teams and organizations improve cycle time, productivity, quality, morale, and customer satisfaction, and then prove it.
Tom is an internationally respected blogger and podcaster for over 17 years focusing on software processes and measurement. His blog entries and podcasts have been listened to or read well over a million times. He co-authored Mastering Software Project Management: Best Practices, Tools and Techniques with Murali K. Chemuturi. Tom penned the chapter titled “Agile Estimation Using Functional Metrics” in The IFPUG Guide to IT and Software Measurement. He is a former president of IFPUG.
Automating Functional Size Using the SW4SysML Profile
Presented by Charles Wesolowski
Session Description: This presentation will demonstrate the capability of automatically counting Function Points from well-formed Software Component Architectures expressed in SysML. Students will learn the specification of software components in SysML.
Benefits to Participants – Know more about techniques for automating the Function Point Count using formal Models
Speaker Bio: Mr. Wesolowski is a Chief Software Systems Engineer with SAIC. He has 40 years of experience in software development and is the current IFPUG president.
Validation of a Function Point Analysis
Presented by Christine Green
Session Description: The consistency of the usage of FPA is extremely important for the benefits of FPA in the business area. If we do not have consistency across organizations in how we interpretive FPA it is a bit like asking a carpenter to prepare for building a house and use an elastic ruler to measure up. Unfortunately, FPA is not as easy as a carpenter’s ruler for that reason we need a robust approach to validate a FPA.
The validation becomes even more important if the result of the FPA is used in the price model between the delivery organization and a client or used for benchmarking for delivery of work completed. Sometime the validation or the agreement would result in interpretations of the rules – and sometimes the validation will result in a change of the result of the FPA.
This presentation will present a validation process that can be used for the validation agreement in a software project including largescale projects.
The exact words from the CPM will be used in addition to an approach for the validation and documentation. Examples will be used to show it in practice with both compliance but also examples of non-compliances with the CPM and how to document these non-compliances in an appropriate manner.
Speaker Bio: Christine is an independent Senior Consultant & Advisor. She is having 25+ years of experience in the software industry. Focus on Process Improvement, Complex, and Critical software projects. Software delivery with success. Worked on Critical contracts and projects for both government and private sector since 2003 for EDS and HPE (employed between 1996-2017). Independent Consultant since 2017. Senior Project Manager at Healthcare Industry Projects (UK, Denmark, and Sweden) and Contractual Price Model Advisor on Large Scale EU Projects.

VAF or not VAF? That’s the Question!
Presented by Luigi Buglione
Session Description: One of the elements initially present in the FPA (not only in the IFPUG version) is the VAF (Value Adjustment Factor), an expression of non-functional product and project requirements which, starting with the number of 'unadjusted' FPs, produced an 'adjusted' final value '. With the issuance of the 14143-x family of standards, ISO in 1998 decided to eliminate it in the standardization process, but still today several contracts (both public and private) include it although both the COSMIC and IFPUG methods no longer include it. Do you want to know more and enter the technical merit of the matter? Then register for this conference!
Speaker Bio: Luigi Buglione is IFPUG board member and Director of IFPUG’s Non-Functional Sizing Standards and Industry Standards committees. He is also a certified SNAP Specialist (CSS). Luigi is working with DXC Technology as a measurement & Process improvement Specialist.
